We just found out that we're pcsing to Ft. Knox July of 2013:-) I know it's early...but if any one have any information to share about the post. How are the schools on post or off what's the job market like. What's the overall perception of the post overall. Any information would be appreciated just trying to get a heads up on things.

Jacki M. asks: We are moving to Fort Knox in a couple of months. Does anyone have any information on the base? How big is it? What is there to do around the area. What is on post housing like? Should we try to live off post? Is there a mall? Where's the best place to get your hair done? all sorts of questions!! haha thanks for any info! :)

Shannon L. asks: We just found out we are pcsing to fort Knox Kentucky can anybody give me any info about it? We are looking to buy a home where are good places to live? TIA!!

Jessica M. says: I grew up in the area. Lots of people say there isn't a lot to do and that it is "too country" but every duty station is what you make of it. You have a number of options as far as where to live. Due to the growth of the base the surrounding communities - Radcliff Elizabethtown and Meade County (where I grew up) have had a housing boom with stuff being built from what I have heard. I loved growing up in Meade County particularly in Brandenburg. It is small town but you have so many big city options around you - Louisville Elizabethtown and you can go over the river to Corydon and Clarksville Indiana. Meade County school systems are really good I have heard people complain about Hardin County (which is Radcliff & Etown). Depending on the kind of lifestyle you are used to and the lifestyle you are willing to adjust to would determine the best place for you to live.

Nelia A. says: I love fort knox..we are trying to get back there when hubby re enlists...

Sarah P. says: I grew up around there too...Ft. Knox is awesome. I think youll love it. I grew up on base.

Amber submitted this review to participate in my flipcam Give Away:

When we move, I will have lived at Fort Knox for six months. This is my first duty station with my husband, and I love it. Fort Knox is beautiful. Plenty of parks and fields and places. There?「どィび「s a pretty decent commissary, if you can?「どィび「t find what you like there, there?「どィび「s a Walmart a quarter mile from Wilson Gate. The PX is pretty decent, too. There?「どィび「s a few shoppettes scattered about, DFAC food is tasty, there?「どィび「s a Golf Course, gas station, class six, post office vet, dentist, etc. etc. It has just about everything you could want. Also, a lot is being updated. Off Post:

Radcliff is the town right outside of Fort Knox. It looks a little old, but that?「どィび「s about it. Elizabethtown is 20-25 minutes away, and has pretty decent shopping. There are hundreds of places to go out and eat. Louisville is 40-45 minutes away, and has more upscale shopping, especially in the St. Matthews area. 4th Street is where all the nightlife is.

If you love to hunt, fish, or go hiking Fort Knox is the place for you! Kentucky is a very beautiful state with all the changing season! The post is going threw a lot of changes right now, a lot of construction, which can be a pain, with building new housing unit for families, road construction, and expanding buildings! Love the commissary and the Px they have a good selection on stuff! Housing can be a pain in the butt to deal with, but for the most part they are ok! In certain housing areas cell phone reception is horrible!!!!! There?「どィび「s nothing you can do about it because of the air field. The towns outside are small but have the necessities for food, a small mall, and walmart! But would recommend going to Louisville for big time shopping or dinner dates with the hubby!

We choose to on post housing and enjoy it. I have learned that it is all how you perceive things. While yes there are some downsides to housing, the long wait list, the inconsistent time frames, the lack of yard maintenance, and sometimes the burden of not having a garage; it?「どィび「s still a benefit to some?「どィャカ.the rest of this entry has been moved and you just HAVE to read it if you are or you think you are PCSing to Ft.Knox

Welcome to Fort Knox, Ky.

Fort Knox KY

Living Off post has its unique moments. Most of the neighborhoods are military occupied. We moved here with 1st Infantry. We are not a part of the Drill Sgt or training portion of the Army. We are regular army. So the post is set up for people who visit or are apart of the Drill Sgt Life/family. The PX and Commisary are OK. But again this post is not equipped to handle large groups of families and their needs.

From what I have seen of Post housing. There is OLD original brick and then there is the very new with garage and backyards. Plenty of schools on post, even a Highschool. The parks are getting better.

Off post. Walmart with in 5 minutes of Post gates. Larger shopping areas, barnes and noble, craft stores, a small and quiet mall are about 15 to 20 minute drive Into Elizabeth Town, depending on time of day and traffic. A lot of Chain Fastfood restaurants, not much for Local restaurants, family owned style businesses or places to eat. Louisville is a 55 minute drive to downtown. Airport is 30 minutes away.

Job wise. Getting a job as a spouse can be difficult. Retail and restaurants are the easiest bet. But Teaching, admin and others seem to retain their people or only hire those that have local references.

Community colleges nearby and Colleges/tech Schools on post open to spouses.
